Pioneering The Way Outfitters Do Business
Fish Habit Outfitters, LLC. was founded by guides Phil White and Joe Vasquez with the understanding that the relationships built between our guests and fishing guides are what makes your fishing trip a more memorable experience. Our company is not built around its staff, but around the idea of team, our family. In fact, some of our team members’ relationships cover almost a lifetime, and they all share the belief that a team succeeds when they work together. These values have quickly established Fish Habit Outfitters, and they have made us leaders in California’s fly fishing industry.
Conveniently located along The American River Parkway, Fish Habit Outfitters specializes in California guided fishing and fly fishing, fly fishing lessons, California travel, international fly fishing vacations, and hosted travel. Consisting of a highly trained and professional team of fishing guides, educators, and specialty team members who able to share a vast range of knowledge and experiences, our team can help take your next adventure to the next level. If you spend time with us, you may hear the phrase,“not your typical guides.” There’s a reason for this. We don’t settle for being average fishing guides or arranging mediocre fishing trips. Tommy Steele was born and raised in Chico, CA and grew up hunting and fishing the local waters of the North State. After studying Natural Resources Management at Chico State and completing his degree in 2012, he began a career in fisheries management. In 2013, Tommy combined his knowledge of the local waters and love for fly fishing with his ability to teach even the most novice fisherman to cast a rod and started guiding clients on the Klamath, Lower Sac, and Feather Rivers.
In the years prior to teaming up with Fish Habit Outfitters, Tommy spent time guiding alongside Craig Nielsen and the crew at Shasta Trout. When Tommy isn’t assisting with various fisheries management projects or guiding guests on one of our local rivers, you can find him on the water with his Labrador retriever by his side fishing for Steelhead, Rainbows, Shad, or Stripers.

Derek Hendrickson grew up in the foothills of Foresthill, California and has been an avid fly fisherman for most of his life. He began fishing at a young age and a trip to Montana changed his life, and the way he fishes, forever. Derek found fly fishing to be the most exciting, therapeutic, and rewarding aspect of angling; one thing he found more pleasing than landing a fish was putting others on fish. Derek is a Yuba River expert and has logged countless hours chasing wild trout and steelhead found within its waters. Derek also specializes in both the upper and lower sections of the American River. He spends much of his time hunting steelhead, shad and striped bass seasonally on the lower river; however, guiding the scenic canyons and white water of the Middle Fork is where his true passion lies. Derek considers the Middle Fork and its tributaries his home waters.
Derek is now proudly passing a lifetime full of lessons and passion from his experiences on to his three sons.
