Will weather effect my day on the water?

Weather prior to cold fronts often lead to favorable fishing conditions due to fish sensing a dropping barometer. Often fish increase their feeding activity in the days leading into the cold front. This puts them on the bite, bulking themselves up for the next few days of inactivity. As the barometer falls, atmospheric pressure is pressed against the waters surface. Fish feel this pressure against there bodies as water doesn’t have enough molecules to distort the pressure created by the falling barometer. The pressure in turn bloats the fish, expanding the air bladders. Fish become lethargic, less likely to move for feeding, as they try to adjust to the discomfort, they commonly descend into a deep pool and suspend until the front has passed. Fishing conditions remain poor for the next few days post front. Fishing will not be at a total loss, but really makes for a tough day.

As the barometer rises, tempretures warm and high pressure is created. It feels as if the weight of the world has been lifted from the river and off the fish. As pressure dissapates, tiny air bubbles are created from within the river bed, these air bubbles then release and make there way through the water column where tiny organisms and bugs hitch hike, taking a free ride to the waters surface. This occurance motivates fish to travel and feed actively, often putting them on the bite just beneath the surface (Emerging).

What about rain?

Rain affects fishing in more ways then one. Fishing during lighter rains camouflage fly lines and make presentations more discrete. Bugs find there way out, flying near the surface of water during or promptly after a rain bringing fish closer to the surface, willing to feed. Fish travel freely during rains as the distorted water surface gives them a feeling of safety, rain also flushes organic matter and organisms into the river causing fish to feed freely.

Why should I hire a guide?

Guides help with the learning curve of a particular fishery, the fisheries equette, the fisheries techniques and general overall knowledge of water angler is seeking to fish. You are either going to hire a guide for one of two reasons; Putting you on fish or learning the fishery. Fish Habit guides are also instructors and are there to teach, whether its just a brush up lesson for the advance angler or the basic skills every new fly fisherman learns at the start of their career.
