Discover the endless adventure of a wilderness backcountry trip, free of stress, in a comfortable atmosphere that lets you truly relax on one of the most beautiful trips you can take. After experiencing the breathtaking Ansel Adams Wilderness on horseback, get ready to chase golden trout. You will enjoy great food around a campfire and will want to have your camera ready.
The Dohnel brothers and our fishing guides personally attend to the details of safety and hospitality that can make the difference between a mediocre trip and one that will be remembered for a long time. All trips are full service, designed to fit your personal needs and interests. A full camp is set up each evening with latrines and tents and a back country kitchen for good old–fashioned cooking. We match you up with gentle, well-mannered horses suited to your riding ability, beginner or expert.
Arrival at Pack Station, June Lake Loop, 7:00 a.m. Guests enjoy a hot, country-style breakfast. The Dohnel’s then partner you up with a horse, matching your ability and riding experience. Once saddled, you’ll then ride into the beautiful Ansel Adams Wilderness. We’ll stop beside Crest Creek, break for lunch, and take a short fishing opportunity, searching for rainbow trout along the shoreline of Gem Lake. We will then continue on up to our 10,500′ base camp in the Algers Lakes Basin. There will be plenty of time to fish that evening for Golden Trout in the two nearby lakes and stream
After breakfast, You can fish one of the 2 nearby Algers lakes where you can expect to catch goldens from 12-16 inches. The stream that runs behind the camp is good for many colorful goldens up to 8 inches. You can also take a day ride up to the 12,600′ pass. Our emphasis is on catch-and-release, but you are always welcome to enjoy your freshly caught backcountry trout with your dinner. After dinner, you can tell stories around the fire, look across the valley in search of roaming dear or hit the evening hatch on the lake.
The group will have the whole day to fish Algers Lakes and find your favorite spot. The option for the day ride to the 12,600′ pass is still open, as well as laying around the campsite reading in the sun.
Fish in the morning if you like, have breakfast, and prepare to depart camp, we will return to the Pack Station, arriving at 4:00 p.m.
The camp setup includes folding chairs, enclosed privy, solar showers, horseshoe pitching set, etc. The meals are made with all fresh vegetables, fruit, and entrees that will satisfy any fisherman. Our cookery has been described as five-star. The only thing you have to bring is your own fishing gear.
Think you’ll want a break from the fishing? No problem—discover the photographer in you, sit back and enjoy a good book or take a hike and marvel at the scenery. And don’t forget that swimsuit!
